Who is derbykayaking.com? A Quick
bio.
Dr Sven Jonsson, an avid and an
Olympic kayaker, with more than 20
years of competing experience in
different type of venues, came with the
great idea to host a race in Louisville
Ky.
In April of 2007 we hosted the first
Derby Kayak challenge to promote this
sport in the Louisville Area. It turned
out to be an outstanding success.
In our first race we had 7 competitors,
all of them raced in KCF (Kayak and
Canoe Federation) sanction kayaks.
This particular type of kayaks are on
average over 20 feet long, 22 inches
wide, weight about 30 pounds. It
seems the more tepee the kayaks are
the faster they are. This year, besides
the KCF kayaks, we want to include all
other type of kayaks as well. Please

About the organizers,
Dr Sven Jonnson is a physician with
his own practice, Blankenbaker
Primary Care, in Louisville KY,
Marcelo Gonzalez, is a UPS pilot, he
has been employed by UPS for 18
years. He is an amateur kayaker and
was able to compete in his first race
last August.
Rafael Reyes, a private business man,
has been involved in this sport for 6
years. Rafael has overcome cancer
and through dedication and focus was
able to overcome many challenges of
this ugly illness. Rafael has managed
to compete in several venues in
different parts of the country.
Last August the Derby Kayakers went
to Warren, PA to compete in the kayak
nationals race.
Why the James Graham Brown Cancer
Center?
For this year we decided to make this
race a charity event. We believe that
there is no better way than to give
back and contribute to the community
than being involved in a good cause.
We have been inspired by a great
friend of 15 years Dr. Mary Carter a
cancer survivor, Mary, against all
odds has managed to fight the uphill
battle of cancer with a lot of courage.
She has always shown a positive
outlook and energy despite her illness.
Mary was able to share her
experience about the James Graham
Brown Cancer Center at the University
of Louisville in how it provided her with
the highest level care.
