SECOND DERBY KAYAK CHALLENGE RACE APRIL 19 and 20, 2008, Louisville, KY The goal of this year’s race was to raise money to benefit the James Graham Brown Cancer Center at the University of Louisville. We are very happy to have raised $770, for the Brown cancer center. The race was schedule for the weekend of April 19th and 20th, 2008. This was a two day race. The race was open to all boats. Placing was grouped in an open category and category for kayaks less than 15 ft. The first day was held at the beautiful Taylorsville Lake, Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate. Saturday was cloudy, windy and cold, all these made for very challenging conditions but the kayak racers were up to the challenge. They completed two loops for a total of 4 miles. The second day was held on a small river, Floyd's Fork River, which has a lot of tight turns. The 6.1 mile course was run as a time trial. The race started at 9 am on a very foggy morning, the sun teased us trying to poke through the clouds. Sunday turned out to be a warmer day than Saturday and the competitors did their very best paddaling Our sincere thanks go to Michael Schubert and Mary Carter, the race officials, for their outstanding help, their efforts made the race go very smooth. Also we need to thank our safety and rescue boat operators, Saturday ,Chad and Todd donated their time to patrol the waters at the lake. Sunday, Richard and Jane Sodano watched over us to make sure we did not get into trouble at the river. An event with out pictures would not be the same, Our thanks also goes to Angela Gonzalez for capturing with her camera the two day race event , and Ken Raebnick who provided us with hard copies of the pictures he took. We need to thank our sponsor Jewish Hospital and St Mary's Health Care for their monetary donation to help offset the cost of organizing this race.
